Choose Your Hard

What Learning to Edit Taught Me About Upskilling

I always thought finance was my domain and that I would stick strictly to it. Yes, we constantly need to learn and upskill within our chosen fields, but lately, I have branched out. I started content creation which has filming, editing, scripting, and understanding more about content creation…..which means I have had to start from scratch and learn how to do everything (while keeping my sanity alive)

If you think it’s easy, let me tell you a secret: the only easy part is consuming content, never creating it.

I remember multiple times over the last month when I wanted to give up, completely convinced that this just wasn’t for me. Then I had find myself right back on tutorial channels, trying to learn all over again.

Facing the Beginner’s Wall

It feels a lot like studying, and not knowing how to do it. Which is true, but also not the full truth. I know I am smart in my own specific areas, but when it comes to the basics of a brand-new craft, I found myself struggling.

I genuinely thought, “This isn’t for me.” No matter how hard I tried to understand the interface and the workflow, I kept hitting roadblocks.

Then I remembered a quote from RM of BTS:

“It’s hard, that’s why not everyone is able to do it.”

That reminder helped me cut myself some slack and start over.

The Reality Behind the Screen

What we see on the internet is always the polished, finished product meant purely for the viewers. The backend……the hours of frustration, deleted timelines, and confusion…is completely invisible.

That’s when it hit me: isn’t life built the exact same way?

Everyone goes through hardships, but they still show up. We have no clue what struggles a person is going through behind the scenes. We look at the final product and think, “Oh, that’s easy-peasy.”

Well, darling, let me break it to you: nothing is easy.

Choose Your Hard

So, choose your hard. My hard right now is learning and understanding video editing tools. But despite the frustration, I won’t give up….I am going to try my best. Wish me luck!

If you are stuck somewhere in your own journey of up skilling or learning a new skill, please take a pause if you need to. But I urge you to stand back up and keep pushing yourself forward.

This community of mine is for everyone. Believe in yourself.
